Clumber Spaniel Breeders

There is no evidence on who were the first Clumber Spaniel breeders. According to one theory, the breed was developed in France by Duke of Newcastle and got its name from Clumber Park that belonged to him. The other theory claims that the Clumber Spaniel was developed in Britain from several older spaniels crossbred with the Basset or the St. Hubert's hound. For the first time, this breed was shown in England in 1859. The Clumber Spaniel was a popular gun dog for the royalty and the nobility.

Today, this breed is rarely used for its original purpose, but many Clumber Spaniels are prized as family pets. Clumber Spaniel breeders of today aim at improving the health, appearance, and temperament of the breed. Working Clumber Spaniels are characterized as endurable gundogs, though not very fast. These dogs are efficient in tracking and fetching the game through bushes. Spaniels bred for hunting are not suited for the role of a family pet, as they need much exercise for both their body and mind. If you need a dog of this breed as a pet, buy a puppy bred specially for indoor living.

Responsible Clumber Spaniel breeders produce reliable, stable, loyal, affectionate puppies. Only when buying from a good breeder you get a health guarantee. Though the breed is hardy and generally healthy, several serious conditions are typical of some bloodlines: hip dysplasia, eye problems, and hypothyroidism. The only way to avoid them in a puppy is checking the breeding stock and culling defective dogs.

Clumber Spaniels are long and heavy-bodied, around 17-20 inches at the withers and 55 to 85 pounds in weight. Dogs of this breed are heavier than most other spaniels. They have a massive head, hound-like face, deep muzzle, hanging flews, and broad ears. The tail may be docked where it’s legal. The coat of the Clumber Spaniel is dense, straight, lying flat, and weather-resistant. White coat color with orange or lemon markings is preferred. The coat is feathered at the neck and throat. Clumber Spaniel breeders who breed dogs for their appearance only should not be trusted.
